What You Need to Know Before Starting Reformer Pilates

What You Need to Know Before Starting Reformer Pilates

What to expect in your first session, what to wear, how the machine works, and tips to avoid injury.

If you've decided to start reformer pilates, we understand your excitement! However, there are a few important details to know before your first session. Firstly, instead of loose, baggy clothes, opt for form-fitting but flexible attire like leggings and a tank top. This allows your instructor to easily observe your joint alignments and muscle engagement.

The sock issue is critical: studios generally require special non-slip pilates socks. This is essential for your safety on the machine. The first session usually begins with a posture analysis and an introduction to the apparatus. You'll learn how the sliding carriage, springs, bar, and straps work. Don't be intimidated—the system is far more intuitive than you might think.

The most important rule: learn to distinguish between pain and the sensation of working. Feeling a burn or stretch in your muscles is normal; but if you feel sharp pain in a joint, alert your instructor immediately. Since resistance on the reformer is adjusted via springs, it's very easy to progress by listening to your body.

Starting with 2-3 sessions per week, you can expect visible changes in your posture and muscle endurance within 4-6 weeks. Stay hydrated and avoid heavy meals right before your session. Enjoy your first class!
